3 years ago I said I’ll never plant hollyhocks, they are too ‘meah’, found in every yard in Ukrainian villages.
This year hollyhocks the previous owner of our house planted are a memory I cherish, precious and glorious.
I fell for all immigrants’ stereotypes, including appreciating my culture and surroundings only when they have been taken from me.
One day I’ll come back to the village my parents live in and will explore it all over again. With a new perspective and appreciation for all the boring, mundane details.
